The Secret of Contentment

Philippians 4:10-23

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…That is why, for Christ’s sake, I am well content in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2 Cor. 12:9-10

“Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and covering, we will be content with that.”

1 Tim. 6:6-8

In this closing passage of Philippians, Paul uses three thoughts that describe true contentment, before revealing the secret of sustaining it.

Phil. 4:10-23

No Matter the circumstances:

I can
all things (4:10-11)
I can
all things (4:12-13)

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.”

2 Cor. 4:17-18

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Gal. 2:20

all things (4:14-20)

Our financial support of the church’s mission is at least as important for our own spiritual development as it is for any good it does for its recipients.

(vs. 18)

God supplies the needs of his people by giving them the resources they need to deal with anything that might come their way.
